SUMMER CYCLING
Preparation of your cycle for summer means making sure it is in first class condition for longer rides and hotter
days.
Go online and check what the temperature is going to be the next day and also check on the day of your ride before setting off.
Get used to the summer heat.
Riding in the heat of the day may do no good to your health. To avoid problems go early morning or at night and get
used to the heat by slowly adjusting the times you go out.
To cool off do not use ice or iced water. Get wet with fresh water around the neck and forearms.
Wash your bike regularly to remove dirt, dust and grime. Use special bike cleaners and brushes.
Check your bike frame, tyres, brakes, chain, and other parts for wear or damage.
Clean and lubricate the chain with a dry lube summer or summer lube to stop rust.
Derailleurs, cables, and pivots: Lube all moving parts for best performance.
Inspect tyres for cuts, punctures, or wear and dont hesitate to replace.
Inflate tyres to the specified pressures. Higher pressure may reduce rolling resistance.
Check that wheels are straight and spokes properly tensioned. Check for wear and replace without hesitation.
Summer rides may be longer, reliable braking is a must.
Ensure brakes are properly maintained and responsive.
Clean and lubricate the chain and gears. Ensure your drivetrain is shifting smoothly.
Check for chain stretch and replace if required.
Look at the suspension forks and rear shockers. Clean and lube if necessary.
Adjust suspension settings for summer riding and your riding style.
Make sure you have sufficient water bottle cages. Hydration is all.
Have essential tools, spare tubes, and patch kits. The most popular option at the moment for storage is the bar bag.
Having lights and reflectors is still important for visibility during the summer months.
Adjust your saddle for you and your comfort for longer summer rides.
Replace handlebar tape or grips.
Get breathable, moisture-wicking cycling clothing. A helmet with ventilation is a summer bonus.
Sunscreen: We all know what happens if you dont, so do!
Arm yourself with quality sunglasses not only to protect your eyes from the sun but also debris thrown up
on the road.
Make a point of regular cleaning and maintenance throughout the summer.
It is recommended to stretch quads, hip flexors, glutes and hamstrings, these can become tighter in cyclists.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure your bike is in excellent condition for summer riding, providing a safer
and more enjoyable experience.
