The Trans Pennine Trail starts in Southport on the west coast of England and runs for  215 miles to Hornsea on the East coast along a mixture of canal paths, disused railway lines, traffic free cycle paths and some quiet roads. Most of the trails have a good surface but we would recommend a mountain bike, hybrid, gravel or touring bike.

The route take the rider from Southport down to Liverpool, Runcorn, Warrington, Manchester, Stockport, Barnsley, Doncaster, Selby and then onto Hull and finally Hornsea.

The time taken to complete the trail depends on ability. Some people have done the Trans Penine Trail CTC in a day but we would recommend 4/5 days allowing time to stop off at places along the route. Its a coast to coast suitable for all abilities as there are no difficult climbs. The only climb of note is over Woodhead at the end of the Longdendale Trail coming out of Hadfield where you may need to push your bike. Once over the top you are rewarded with a long downhill section to Dunford Bridge and onto Wortley.

There are plenty of places to stay, eat and drink along the route and some interesting diversions such as the Anthony Gormley ‘Another Place’  statues at Crosby.

Dont forget your safety helmet
