Renting An Electric Scooter For City Use
Renting an electric scooter in cities is a convenient way to negotiate traffic, especially for shorter journeys. You can rent e-scooters in parts of the UK through e-scooter rental trials which some cities are trialing. Where a rental trial scheme is running, electric scooters can be used on public roads, some cycle lanes, and some public spaces. You must abide by the relevant road traffic laws.
Are any escooters legal in the UK?
UK law explained January 2024.
It’s legal to buy escooters in the UK, however there are many places where it’s legal to rent and ride on the road. It is not yet legal to ride your own scooter on public roads. TAKE NOTE.
A 12-year-old cannot legally ride an escooter in the UK. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 they are classified as motor vehicles and require a valid driving license plus insurance which are not available until age 16. Riding an e-scooter without the required license and insurance means fines and penalty points on your license.
No insurance means a £300 fine and 6 penalty points.
No driving license means a £100 fine and 3 penalty points.
Government Trials:
The UK government is currently running trials for e-scooter rentals, and escooter riders in these trials must be 18 or
over and have at least a provisional driving license.
Mandatory education:
All new riders in the trials must complete mandatory education on riding safety.
