The Cantii Way is one of the UK’s best long-distance cycling routes, taking riders on a spectacular journey through the heart of Kent, often known as the “Garden of England”. This circular cycling route covers approximately 237km (147 miles) and starts and finishes in the picturesque village of Wye near Ashford. The route combines stunning coastal scenery, historic towns, rolling countryside and quiet rural lanes, making it an ideal choice for touring cyclists, bikepackers and weekend adventurers. This Cantii Cycle Trail is named after the Cantii who were an Iron Age Celtic tribe. The county of Kent and city of Canterbury and Canterbury Cathedral derive their names from them.

Route Highlights

Cyclists can expect an incredible mix of landscapes and attractions including:

The historic city of Canterbury
The White Cliffs of Dover
The coastal towns of Whitstable, Margate and Folkestone
Romney Marsh and Dungeness
The Kent Downs National Landscape
Vineyards, orchards and traditional Kentish villages
Quiet country lanes and traffic-free cycle paths

The route offers a fantastic balance between countryside riding and coastal exploration, with plenty of opportunities to stop for food, accommodation and local attractions along the way.

Is the Cantii Way Difficult?

The Cantii Way is generally considered a moderate cycling route. Most of the terrain is relatively flat, although there are some hills around Wye, Dover and parts of the Kent Downs. The challenge comes more from the overall distance than the climbing.

The route uses a mixture of:

Quiet country roads
Traffic-free cycle paths
Forest tracks
Bridleways
Coastal paths

Most cyclists complete the route over three to four days, although stronger riders may choose to tackle it over a long weekend or even in a single effort.

Best Bike for the Cantii Way

A gravel bike is arguably the best choice for the Cantii Way, providing speed on the tarmac sections while remaining comfortable on the gravel tracks and bridleways.

Suitable bikes include:

Gravel bikes
Touring bikes
Hybrid bikes
Mountain bikes

Road bikes with narrow tyres can struggle on some of the rougher sections, particularly after wet weather. If riding a road bike, wider tyres of at least 32mm are recommended.

Most of the Canti trail is largely traffic free on tramac with a few gravel trails. Its a fairly flat route with few hills but beware of wind! Its ideal for touring / hybird / gravel bikes. If doing it on a MTB we would recommend narrower tyres. If you wish to do the route on a e-bike there plenty of cafes, pubs etc on route for charging (check first!). Ensure you carry spares for any roadside repairs, and check our guide to cycle shops in Kent for servicing, parts and emergency repairs along the route.
